The Toyota Vellfire and Alphard are Japan's twin-flagship luxury MPVs — mechanically identical, stylistically very different. For overseas buyers, both represent outstanding value from Japan's used car market. But choosing between them matters, and the right answer depends on your market, use case, and personal preference.

This guide breaks down every meaningful difference so you can make the right call.

The Short Answer

  • Choose Alphard if you want a formal, refined, prestigious look — suits corporate buyers, Japan domestic, and markets that appreciate conservative luxury
  • Choose Vellfire if you want a bold, aggressive, statement-making presence — suits style-conscious markets in Southeast Asia and buyers who want to stand out
  • Choose LEXUS LM if you need individual executive rear seats, maximum luxury, and the Lexus badge — this is the top tier above both

Visual Design

Alphard

The Alphard's face is defined by its wide, horizontal front grille and measured proportions. It looks expensive without shouting — the kind of vehicle a corporate executive or senior government official would use. Clean, commanding, understated.

Vellfire

The Vellfire uses a split-face design with a distinctive two-tier front — dramatically different from the Alphard despite sharing the same body. It reads as sportier, more personal, more visible. In markets where street presence matters, the Vellfire wins.

Bottom line: Same car underneath. Different face, different personality.

Platform and Powertrain

Both current-generation Vellfire and Alphard are built on Toyota's TNGA platform and share:

  • 2.5L Atkinson-cycle petrol hybrid (standard on most grades)
  • E-Four (electric AWD) on 4WD hybrid variants
  • CVT transmission
  • ~300 PS combined output
  • ~14–18 km/L fuel consumption (hybrid)

There is no powertrain advantage to choosing one over the other. They are identical mechanically.

Grade Structure Comparison

Alphard Grades (current generation)

  • G — entry level, fabric seats
  • S — sports-flavoured exterior, better seats
  • Z — mid-premium, upgraded interior
  • Z G Edition — higher spec
  • Executive Lounge Z — flagship, individual rear captain seats, ottomans, 26-inch rear screen

Vellfire Grades (current generation)

  • Z — base Vellfire spec
  • Z Premier — top grade, full leather, ottoman, power door, universal step

The Alphard Executive Lounge is the closest thing to the LEXUS LM experience at a lower price point. The Vellfire Z Premier is excellent but does not have the individual executive configuration of the Executive Lounge.

Interior Comparison

Alphard Executive Lounge

  • Individual rear captain seats (2 passengers)
  • Power-adjustable ottomans
  • 26-inch rear entertainment screen
  • Rear air conditioning
  • JBL or Dolby Atmos audio depending on spec
  • Maximum VIP rear experience

Vellfire Z Premier

  • 7-seat layout (captain + third row)
  • Genuine leather throughout
  • Ottoman on captain seats
  • Power rear door
  • Universal step
  • Surround view camera
  • Still premium — just not as exclusive as Executive Lounge

If you are buying for VIP transport of 1–2 rear passengers: Alphard Executive Lounge or LEXUS LM. If you need 6–7 comfortable seats with premium feel: Vellfire Z Premier.

Price Comparison (Japan Market)

Model Typical price range (used, low mileage, current gen)
Alphard Z / G ¥5,500,000–¥7,500,000
Alphard Executive Lounge ¥8,000,000–¥12,000,000
Vellfire Z Premier ¥6,500,000–¥9,000,000
LEXUS LM 300h ¥8,000,000–¥12,000,000
LEXUS LM 500h ¥13,000,000–¥18,000,000

F1AUTO currently has a Vellfire Hybrid Z Premier at ¥7,075,000 (21,000 km, 2028 warranty).

Which Markets Prefer Which?

Singapore

Both sell well. The Alphard has historically dominated corporate fleet use. The Vellfire has a strong following among private buyers who want the bolder look.

Malaysia

Similar to Singapore — Alphard is more prevalent in corporate use. Vellfire popular with private buyers.

Middle East (Saudi Arabia)

The Vellfire's bold presence translates well in markets that appreciate visual impact. Saudi Arabia allows RHD, making Japan-source Vellfire directly usable.

Thailand

Vellfire has a dedicated following in Thailand — the bold face is particularly appreciated in the Thai premium MPV market.

Australia

Alphard dominates — the conservative, formal aesthetic suits Australia's corporate market better.

Hong Kong

Both are popular. The Executive Lounge Alphard commands the highest premium in Hong Kong's VIP market.

Resale Value

Both vehicles hold value exceptionally well in export markets. General observations:

  • Alphard Executive Lounge has the strongest resale due to its exclusive VIP specification
  • Vellfire Z Premier holds value well — especially in SE Asian markets where it has a loyal buyer base
  • Lower mileage and full service history are the biggest value factors for either model

FAQ

Can I special-order an Alphard Executive Lounge through F1AUTO? Yes. We can source Alphard Executive Lounge through Japan's auction and dealer network. Contact us on WhatsApp with your preferred spec, budget, and timing.

Is the Vellfire available outside Japan? The current generation Vellfire is sold exclusively in Japan. Purchasing from Japan is the only way to obtain one unless you find a previous-generation export model in your local market.

What colour is most popular for export? White (パール) and black are the most universally popular for both Vellfire and Alphard in export markets. Silver is also strong. Unusual colours can reduce resale flexibility.

Does hybrid affect import regulations? Some markets offer duty reductions for hybrid vehicles. Check with your local customs agent. In general, the hybrid powertrain is an advantage for both import and resale.

How long does shipping from Japan take? Depends on destination: Singapore ~10 days, Saudi Arabia ~20 days, Australia ~14 days, Kenya ~30 days.
